SNAP has a „three shots” rule that prohibits people who have committed three violations from receiving benefits for life. Carol, who had overcome a drug addiction, became even more stressed every time she asked for food stamps and was rejected. During the pandemic, she lost her job and decided to turn to legal services. Carol shared her story with hundreds of lawyers, law students, and lawyers at Talk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid in January 2022. Participants in the virtual lobby day called on state lawmakers to increase funding for civil legal aid. Immigration status for non-citizens (proof of legal non-citizen status if you or a household member apply for SNAP but are not a U.S. citizen) Carol said she was grateful that legal services helped people who „don`t know all the right words or paths to take or who to visit when needed.” Curated for quick reference, the guide guides promoters step-by-step through financial eligibility rules, household composition, immigrant eligibility, and more. It provides legal and technical information about the program, including detailed references to DTA regulations and procedural documents, USDA regulations, where applicable.

In recent months, thieves have stolen more than a million SNAP dollars from thousands of Massachusetts families, jeopardizing their food and economic stability. Criminals attach a „skimming device” to a point-of-sale (POS) terminal to capture household account and PIN information. The criminals then use this information to create a fake card and steal SNAP benefits. Example: Selina is a mother of a child on Simplified Reporting. Their SNAP was approved in January, so their interim report is expected in June. Selina starts a second part-time job in March and earns $200 a week. Their total gross monthly income from both jobs is below their gross household income limit. All she has to do is report the second job in her interim report. In April, however, Selina works more shifts and her gross income exceeds the gross income limit. It must notify DTA of this increase in income before May 10.
